Orlando, Fla. – Everest University will celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day in the Levy Performing Arts Center on Monday, June 20.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865, and Everest University’s celebration will focus on the theme of “Overcoming Adversity.” The event will feature the Mosso-Kan West African Dance & Drum Ensemble performing traditional choreography and highlighting West African heritage. Retired Fire Chief Al Wilson will serve as guest speaker.

“Juneteenth is an important holiday not just to African Americans, but to all Americans,” said Travis George, Everest University Director of Multicultural Affairs and Special Projects. “It is a time that the citizens of this country agreed that slavery was cruel and needed to be abolished. Therefore, we are celebrating a union not just of Blacks but of all races, ethnicities, and cultures.”

The community is invited to join Everest University as we observe this important celebration of heritage, history, and freedom.
